Behavior Intervention Team

The Behavior Intervention Team (BIT) provides a proactive and supportive multidisciplinary team approach to prevention, assessment, and intervention of situations or individuals that may pose a threat to the safety and well-being of the campus community. The BIT is chaired by the Executive Director of Student Life and meets regularly to discuss student cases and recommend appropriate courses of action to keep distraught students on a continued path to success.  It is a primary goal of the BIT to assist students, faculty, and staff with early interventions to not infringe upon the learning environment any more than necessary.  The BIT also makes recommendations to the campus and other personnel which may improve the physical and emotional health for all students.  For more information, you may contact the Executive Director of Student Life at 432-335-6338.

Health Emergencies

Regular health care is the responsibility of the student. A person who becomes aware of the need for first aid or other health emergency on campus should contact the closest Odessa College employee. If emergency medical services are required, the employee will call 911. The EMT unit will decide and recommend whether on-premises treatment or transport to an emergency room will be required.

Charges incurred for emergency medical service are the responsibility of the individual receiving services.

Licensed Professional Counselor

Individuals may decide to seek counseling for a number of reasons. It’s not unusual to feel overwhelmed while trying to work through personal problems - to feel “stuck” in a pattern of behavior. When issues arise that begin interfering with one’s life - whether inside the classroom or in other aspects of day-to-day activities - counseling offers a nonjudgmental, safe environment in which to discuss those issues.

*Counseling sessions are FREE and available both in person and online! To make an appointment in person, please email cares@odessa.edu or download the META app today.

Mental & Physical Health

If officials of the college determine that a student’s mental or physical condition prohibits the student from benefiting from instruction at the college, or if the student creates a continuing disturbance to the learning process or creates a safety hazard to himself or others, the student will be advised of the situation. Every attempt will be made to give the student the opportunity to remedy the situation in question and obtain assistance, if needed. If the situation cannot be resolved, the student may be referred to the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and/or to the Executive Director of Student Life.

If the situation still cannot be resolved, an instructor may request that the student be withdrawn from the class(es) in question. When a withdrawal of this nature is made, it is for the welfare of the student and the college. No special notation will be made on the student’s transcript regarding the withdrawal.
